Twin Pregnancy Diary

The Dreaded 'B' Word
(Originally posted Mar. 16, 2001)--It's been a full month since our last visit to the doctor but after several weeks of anxiousness, we went to our doctor again on Tuesday, March 13.

As in all of the previous visits, it started with the checking of the weight, a urine sample and then a blood pressure test. Only this time, the nurse taking Diane's blood pressure didn't like the reading. When Dr. Hartshorne entered the examining room a minute later, she decided she wanted to take the blood pressure again. Which she did, resulting in a normal reading. A third test also revealed a normal reading.

The doctor asked how Diane has been feeling, which continues to be good. She hasn't had any bad symptoms except for some (to be expected) back pain. But the doctor decided she wants to take another blood pressure reading Friday morning, March 16, to see how her BP measures then. If the blood pressure reading is high on Friday, it might mean some prescribed bed rest.

In many of our conversations with other moms of multiples, we hear stories of bed rest that started even earlier than where Diane is in the pregnancy, in the middle of the 25th week. Still other moms mention how they had no bed rest at all. But with the possibility that Diane's blood pressure is higher than it should be, our doctor said that Diane may have to start bed rest soon and stop working.

Baby A & Baby B

Everything else at the doctor's visit went well. The twins are both growing at a rapid pace and are very close in size. Baby A weighed 700 grams and Baby B weighed 720 grams, meaning each baby weighs about a pound and a half. Which is pretty good for twins in week 25.

The doctor said each showed good amniotic fluid levels and both babies continue to be very active.

Now our only question is how much longer will mom be able to be active? Diane's BP reading was much better on March 16, still a little high, but not bad. We're going to continue to monitor it daily but bedrest isn't necessary quite yet. Next appointment is Tuesday, March 27!
