Twin Pregnancy Diary

The Home Stretch?
(Originally posted May 16, 2001)--On Monday night, the two of us attended a local Houston-area Parents of Multiples Night Out Dinner where most of the moms of twins we spoke to were amazed to see how well Diane is doing at this stage of her pregnancy with twins. Some told us how they had already delivered at this point (we begin week 34 on Thursday) and most were astounded to hear that Diane is still working and hasn't been forced to have any bedrest as we enter the last few weeks of her pregnancy.

These remarkable moms of twins and triplets are a constant source of good information and encouragement for us as we learn a little of the joys and difficulties we'll be facing soon enough with the births of our twins. Diane is looking forward to joining this special fraternity of moms--the big question now is just when will the big day occur?

On Tuesday, we went to the doctor's for our now weekly visit. We're happy to report that the news is still positive. A quick measurement taken during an ultrasound showed Baby B is probably over 5 pounds by now and Baby A (who is more difficult to measure in the lower body position) is somewhere between 4 1/2 and 4 3/4 pounds. They are both still head-down, both have good fluid levels surrounding them and both are still active as ever.

Dr. Hartshorne took a look at Diane's cervix and it's still not showing any signs of early effacement. So we're hopefully on target for a full-term twin pregnancy, anytime after 37 weeks. Diane's OB-GYN mentioned she would think about inducing labor if Diane enters week 38 and is showing signs of a thinning cervix, but probably wouldn't force anything if all signs were indicating she is still not too uncomfortable.

So the bottom line is we still don't know when these twins will arrive. The due date is still June 28 and all bets are on for anytime during the month of June.

In other news, we made a lot of progress in getting the nursery ready as we now have a large (4' by 4') Noah's Ark canvas on one wall and smaller (1' by 1') paintings ready to be hung on another wall. Many of the shower gifts are now out of their boxes and packed away. As soon as a dresser and bookcase arrive (hopefully in the next few weeks), we'll finish the room and leave it ready for our babies to inspect.

We also packed our hospital bag in preparation for that big trip. We're still not sure which hospital Diane will deliver at. We had been thinking of using a Level 3 hospital in Houston but our OB-GYN can deliver at two local hospitals and actually feels Diane may be able to deliver at a closer hospital to our house if things continue to go well.

Diane will continue to keep working for at least another week as long as her blood pressure remains good (and her readings have been excellent lately). She's a remarkable woman and we can't wait for our twins to meet her! (oh yeah--their daddy's not chopped liver, either. They should like him just fine too). We should have our next update in late May.
